Squares and Castle Hill
Strolling around the Historic Center
Overview
Lamia's history is rich and goes way back in time! Built at the foot of Mount Othrys, on green hills with buildings and neighborhoods full of traditional color with picturesque streets and flowery courtyards.
In order to get to know the city, your stroll should begin from its' four main squares and their "secret" routes that will lead you to the Castle. Starting from the Parkou Square you will come across a number of notable neoclassical buildings. This square is the heart of the city and serves as a meeting place and a promenade. Here, various events, concerts, and activities are hosted. The bronze statue of the Evzone is a prominent feature of the square placed there to honor the Evzones of the 5/42 Battalion, based in Lamia, who played a distinguished role in the recent history of Greece.
As you walk uphill towards Diakou Square, stop to admire the imposing statue of Athanasios Diakos, the hero of the Greek revolution. The statue, in the stance of a fighting swordsman with a broken scimitar, dominates in the center of the square. This was a neighborhood of great importance during the years right after the Greek Revolution and around the square, impressive buildings, monuments and old mansions, still stand there to testify that. Don't forget to explore the steps that will lead you to one of the most beautiful paths towards the hill of Saint Loukas where you will enjoy a special view of the city.
Continue towards Eleftherias Square (transl. Freedom Square) which is considered the oldest square in Lamia. The most important historical moments of the city have taken place here. Numerous historical buildings used to surround this square but only two are preserved to this day. The residence of the Hatzichristos family, which is connected to the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the exceptional building of the Region of Central Greece. The bustling, lively square with its many cafes is a favorite choice for entertainment by many residents and visitors of the city.
Descending towards Laou Square (transl. People’s Square), the imposing plane trees compose a welcoming landscape and stand there as significant witnesses to the existence of underground streams in the area. In the center of the square, the statue of Captain Aris Velouchiotis of the ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army) stands prominently surrounded by beautiful neoclassical buildings. Here you can taste the famous grilled dishes and shop and buy traditional local products.
Afterwards, you can ascend through the steps and narrow cobblestone alleys and, following the neoclassical houses, reach Lamia Castle with its unique view.
