Thermopylae - Alamana - Gorgopotamos
Historical Triangle
Overview
The historical triangle formed between Thermopylae, Alamana and Gorgopotamos awaits visitors to narrate them fascinating stories that go back up to 25 centuries.
Our journey through time begins in 480 BC in Thermopylae where the famous battle between the Greeks and Persians, that changed the course of World History, took place. The bronze statue of KIng Leonidas dominates the spot to this day. Nearby Thermopylae's Innovative Centre of Historical Information, the Monument of 700 Thespians, as well as the thermal baths that are "hidden" in the coastal passage contribute to creating a comprehensive historical tour.
Continuing our journey through time, we come across the bridge of Alamana, the battle of which constitutes another emblematic chapter of Greek history. Here, one of the first battles of the 1821 Greek Revolution against the Ottoman rule took place. Athanasios Diakos, bravely and self-sacrificingly, led the defense, facing the outnumbering Ottoman armies and ultimately suffering a martyr's death. Today, the site of the historic battle is dominated by a high-art mosaic that honors the heroism and self-sacrifice of the great Hero.
Our journey through time is completed at the foot of Oiti mountain. The historic Gorgopotamos bridge connects the area of Bralos with Lamia and carries the Athens - Thessaloniki railway line. It is one of the most famous railway bridges in Europe due to its blowing up during the WWII, a result of the cooperation of the two largest Greek resistance organizations and allied forces. Today, it is an important place of honor and memory and the anniversary of its detonation has been established as an annual nationwide celebration of the National Resistance.
Every year an increasing number of visitors choose to stop and get to know the glorious historical routes around Lamia.
