Kolonos hill
The path leading towards the low rising hill, takes its name by Kolonos and is a unique stop for every visitor. The passage ends at the very spot where the last standing Spartans and Thespians met a heroic death in the fight against the Persians. Herodotus mentions that at the top of the hill, after the Persian wars, a marble Lion was erected in honour of Leonidas and his fallen soldiers. Today, at this very top, there is a copy of the epigram of Simonides Kios. There is something rewarding for every visitor who takes the scenic route through nature and gazes at mountain Kallidromos.
Kolonos hill
Opposite the brass statue of Leonidas lies a low-rise hill, Kolonos hill.
According to Herodotus, that was the point where the last phase of the battle of Thermopylae was fought in 480 BC.
A passage through nature and through time leads to the place where the last standing Spartians and Thespians met a heroic death from the arrows of Persian archers.
Devastating everything coming their way, the archers reached the highest point at the wall of the Phocaeans and released an attack on the lowest point of Kolonos hill. The burial of all the men who fell alongside king Leonidas was on site.
Multiple excavations and testimonies reveal findings from the roman and byzantine period. In 1939, a small-scale excavation by the archaeologist Spyridonas Marinatos unearthed fortification from different periods, roman and byzantine tombs and ruins of roman and byzantine structures.
In the present day, sections from the above-mentioned structures can be seen, and on the top of the hill there is a copy of the epigram of Simonides Kios, who wrote it to honour the dead of the Thermopylae battle.
“Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here obedient to their laws we lie”
A visit to the historical monument is a reminder of the sacrifice which defined European history.
Wanting to celebrate and commemorate its history, Municipality of Lamia organizes Thermopelia Festival every year in early September, hosting plays and cultural exhibitions.
