Municipal Conservatory of Lamia
The Municipal Conservatory of Lamia was founded in 1938 as a branch of the National Conservatory of Athens, with its first Director being the great musician Manolis Kalomoiris. It is one of the oldest conservatories in Greece, being the fifth to be established in the country.
In 1959, Alexandros Ainian took over its direction, significantly enhancing it, especially with the establishment of the Lamia Municipal Choir, which garnered numerous awards and distinctions not only in Greece but also in Europe. The choir continues its rich artistic activity to this day.
Since its establishment, the Conservatory was housed in various buildings in the city center until it found its definitive "home" in the Plati mansion, on Achilleos and Dyovounioti streets. This is a two-story, stone-built building constructed in 1860 to serve as the residence of the Hatziskos family, significant fighters of the 1821 Revolution. Later, the mansion passed into the ownership of the Platis family, a family of the Mayor of Lamia and a Member of Parliament from Fthiotida, Georgios Platis, before the family donated it to the Municipality of Lamia. An additional modern building was later constructed on the plot to meet the growing needs of the Conservatory for classrooms and event spaces.
The Conservatory offers a wide range of musical studies and has excelled in cultural events in recent years, with notable milestones including the appearance of the Symphony Orchestra at the Athens Concert Hall, the award from the Union of Greek Theatre and Music Critics in recognition of its rich artistic and educational contribution, the establishment of the cultural institution "Spring of Music in the city," and the founding of a music technology workshop, where students engage with modern technological means through creative and innovative educational programs. Many of the programs in the workshop are being implemented for the first time in Greece!
Its educational work is further enhanced by the seminars it organizes with renowned artists and educators as instructors.
