Municipal Art Gallery of Lamia "Alekos Kontopoulos"
Established in 1984, the Municipal Art Gallery of Lamia "Alekos Kontopoulos" is located at 6-8 Aenianon Street, in the center of Lamia, a few meters away from the building of the Old Lamia Town Hall and Alekos Kontopoulos Square. The same building also houses the Fthiotida Branch of the State General Archives, the Public Central Library of Lamia, and the Hall of the Municipal Council.
The gallery was named in honor of Alekos Kontopoulos, a Lamia-born painter who loved and honored his unique homeland.
Alekos Kontopoulos was born in Lamia in 1904 and passed away in Athens in 1975. He began painting during his school years, and after completing his high school education, he studied iconography for two years. During that period, he organized his first solo exhibition in a café in Lamia. In 1923, he passed the exams and was accepted into the third year of the Athens School of Fine Arts, where his teachers considered him the "greatest hope of realistic painting" in the country. He studied in Paris with a scholarship from the Athens Academy and returned several times to Lamia, which was a source of inspiration and a stimulating place for his artistic creation.
Alekos Kontopoulos introduced Abstract Art to Greece, and from 1950 onwards, he was recognized internationally as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Art. His ethos, democratic and humanistic ideas, and his overall approach to life were reflected in his works. For this reason, he has been characterized as a "poet painter" and a "painter of the new Humanism."
The collection of the Municipal Art Gallery of Lamia includes 144 works and sketches by Alekos Kontopoulos, as well as a series of unique ceramic plates painted with acrylic materials. Additionally, the permanent collections feature engravings by Panagiotis Gravalos, works by Phaidon Anastasiadis, works donated by the Ministry of Culture, and works by private individuals.
The Municipal Art Gallery of Lamia also organizes periodic exhibitions and various other cultural events, such as small concerts and book presentations.
